Big Springs Middle School Students are EXCITED about Science!
Big Springs Elementary has made a significant investment in the Math, Science, and Technology programs this year. Specifically, our older students in grades 4th thru 8th have seen everything from brand new math curriculum to multimedia tablets in the classroom. Our focus on Common Core has provided more meaningful and hands-on lessons that reach students. In science, we've added a tremendous amount to the student experience.
New this year is our hands-on science lab, where updated curriculum is enhanced with experiments and projects that allow all students (4th thru 8th grade) to really do the work themselves. Big Springs has invested largely in the science lab, with brand new science tables, locking chemical cabinets, a wash & safety station, safety gear for all staff and students, materials and equipment (such as microscopes, scales, hot plates, etc...), and most importantly, a trained and experienced Lab Technician (welcome Amanda Twitchell), who joins us with nearly a decade of experience in the chemistry labs at College of the Siskiyou. All of these improvements have the students excited, engaged, and highly motivated to succeed. This opportunity will undoubtedly improve the experience for our students, and hopefully give them a leg up when they get to high school and college level science.
So please stop by, introduce yourself to Amanda "Mandy", and check out our new Science Lab. You'll be impressed, and see why the students of Big Springs are so excited about Science this year!

BIG SPRINGS ELEMENTARY CLASS OF 2015
Big Springs Elementary School Class of 2015 Fundraiser
Hello Big Springs Community. We need your help to spread the word! On Saturday, November 1st from 9:00am - 3:00pm, our Class of 2015 will be holding a "FREE ELECTRONICS RECYCLING" Fundraiser. Old electronics such as Televisions, Stereos, Computers, Printers, Fax Machines, Typewriters, Cell Phones, Gaming Consoles, Etc..., will be collected FREE OF CHARGE (there is typically a fee that you must pay to dispose of these items at a landfill).
You may bring in items BEFORE the November 1st collection date (to be stored on school grounds until November 1st), by calling the school at 459-3189 and scheduling a drop off time. Items collected are then recycled and the students will receive funding from All Green Recycling based on the total weight of collected items.
The more that we have dropped off to be recycled, the more the students can raise towards their class fund (for the 8th Grade Trip and Graduation Ceremony). So please tell your friends; Do your community a favor by recycling, and help send these wonderful students to High School in style by giving them a first-class graduation ceremony and sending them on a memorable class trip. Thank you for your support!

Big Springs Athletics
Important Information about BSE Athletics-
(Published on Wednesday, October 8th)
There are some changes in our athletic programs this year, including fielding trams in both the Siskiyou County Athletic League-SCAL (Big Springs, Butte Valley, Butteville, Dunsmuir, Grenada, Happy Camp, Jackson Street, Montague, Scott Valley, Sisson, and Weed), and for our younger developing athletes, the Mountain Valley League-MVL (Big Springs, Castle Rock, Gazelle, Golden Eagle Charter, Hornbrook, McCloud, and Shasta Valley).
For the SCAL only, our school will now charge a minimal entrance fee of $2.00 for games. This is to be consistent with all other schools in the SCAL, and will help us maintain quality athletic programs. All funds raised at “the gate” will be rolled back into our athletic programs.
Also, for students participating in team sports we will enforce the “current physical exam”. (See Mr. Hosler for low cost options), and both academic and behavior “eligibility” for sports. Additionally, students who miss games for reasons other than “excused absences” will not play for at least one half of the following game.

Monitor Your Child's Academic Progress
Our improved method of communicating your child's academic progress is now in its second year. Online Grade Books are available by logging on to Aeries and using your assigned username and password (these went home during Back To School Night, or were mailed for those who were unable to attend). These are all private/unique codes, and will only allow you to view your own child's progress (please do NOT share your assigned username or password with anyone else). However; if any parent requires assistance with this method, Jesi, Mrs. Charter, or Mr. Hosler are available to assist you AND provide free and easy access to the required hardware and software needed for Aeries access. Those are available at the school only, and should be accessed by appointment only, and not during normal instructional hours.
For more information, please contact Mr. Hosler at 459-3189 or email at [email protected]. Thank you.

See Jesi ASAP!).

Congratulations Lady Badgers!
Congratulations to the 2013/2014 Big Springs Lady Badgers Basketball Team! They finished the season undefeated in the MVL, and won FIRST PLACE at the 2014 MVL Postseason Tournament. Our girls finished the season with an overall record of 17-wins, 3-losses, and 1-tie. In addition to going undefeated in league AND winning the MVL Postseason Tournament this season, the Lady Badgers also won 1st Place at the inaugural Badger Invitational, 4th Place at the Crescent City Jaycee Tournament, and won the Consolation half of the bracket at the Montague Invitational.
Please join me in some well deserved recognition of our Girls Basketball Program, as they have already accomplished a tremendous amount in their young athletic careers. 2014/2015 looks even brighter, as the Lady Badgers will return their top 7 players from 2013/2014, and have a total of 14 returning athletes for next year's team.

2013 / 2014 M.V.L. Postseason Basketball Tournament
Friday, February 21st and Saturday, February 22nd
@
Montague Gymnasium
The Tournament Brackets for the upcoming MVL Boys and Girls Postseason Tournament were just received. Although Games #2 (and #3 if necessary) times and opponents depend solely on wins and losses from the previous round, we have the set times and opponents for each team's opening game.
Our BOYS team placed 3rd during the regular season, and are therefore the #3 Seed in the boys bracket. They begin tournament play on Friday, February 21st at 4:00pm against Castle Rock. If our boys win that game, they would then play Shasta Valley just a few hours later, with tipoff scheduled for 6:00pm that night. If the boys were to lose tomorrow's opening round game, they would then play Saturday at 2:00pm for the Consolation Award. There are obviously many other scenarios, so please review your Tournament Bracket once received.
Our GIRLS team placed 1st during the regular season, and have earned a BYE in round #1 as the #1 Seed. Their first game will be in round #2 with an automatic bid to the semi-final round on Saturday, February 22nd at 10:00am. They will play the winner of the Gazelle vs. Shasta Valley game (to take place Friday evening). Round #3 for our girls is slightly less complicated. If the girls win their 10:00am game, they would then play in the Championship Game on Saturday at 5:00pm. If they lose the semi-final game, they would then play for 3rd place on Saturday at 3:00pm.
Each team's coach will have specific instructions for their players regarding transportation, attendance, meals, and promptness. However, please be aware that because this is a tournament, games may begin EARLY. Athletes arriving less than 30-minutes before a scheduled game may be considered LATE, thereby jeopardizing his or her playing time in that game. Players who miss a practice and/or game may be deemed "ineligible" by the coach, as all practices and games are considered mandatory.
Additionally, athletes requiring special arrangements for transportation to and from Big Springs and/or Montague MUST MAKE PLANS AHEAD OF TIME. If a player attempts to arrange transportation on the day of a game, he or she may be denied a ride. Additionally, each player/family will be responsible for his or her own meals during the tournament. Parent volunteers will NOT provide meals, snacks, or concession stand money.
Finally, please be aware that this weekend's tournament is considered a "competitive tournament", meaning that some teams may not play their youngest / most inexperienced players. Game time is NOT guaranteed in this tournament. If you have any questions regarding your child's playing time / coach's philosophy / team goals, you will need to speak with your child's coach at an appropriate time. Immediately before or after a game / practice is not considered appropriate. Please make arrangements ahead of time so that we can address any concerns.
If you have any questions, please contact Coach Hosler at (530) 514-8356 (personal cell).

Lady Badgers Hitting Stride, Improve Record to 10-1 Since Kings Event!
In case you haven't heard, our Basketball Program is turning some heads out here in Big Springs. With an unbelievable 38-students participating in our two teams this season, our focus on improving the "PROGRAM" has paid huge dividends. Specifically, our Lady Badgers have taken that preverbal "Next-Step" and the wins have started to stack up.
Our Lady Badgers began the season with three scrimmages and two of the biggest events of the season. After hosting Castle Rock and a "Home-And-Home" vs. Montague, our girls traveled to Crescent City and faced off against some fantastic teams from our region. They then traveled to Sleep Train Arena and hosted Grenada in an exhibition game that our team will remember forever.
Even with the strong competition, our Lady Badgers still managed to compile a record of 3-3-1 during a tremendously difficult stretch. Then, beginning with league play, they showed that all of their hard work does in-fact payoff.
Their recent run of victories have included a FIRST PLACE finish in the inaugural Badger Invitational, a Consolation victory in the annual Montague Invitational, and an unblemished MVL record in league play this season. Victories against difficult opponents such as Butteville, Igo-Ono, McCloud, Gazelle, Shasta Valley, and Castle Rock have improved the Lady Badgers record to 10-1 over the past 6-weeks. As of 2-14-14, their overall record now stands at 13-wins, 4-losses, and 1-tie.
Our girls will put their unblemished league record on the line this coming Wednesday, February 19th at 5:00pm when they host McCloud for the 2014 MVL League Regular Season Title, and an opportunity to claim the #1 Seed at the MVL Tournament on February 21st and 22nd.
If you haven't seen these girls in action, you're missing out. Additionally, we're fortunate to have an extremely young team, as the 2014/2015 Season looks even brighter, as only one roster player is in 8th grade. That adds up 14 returning athletes (including all five starters)!
Way to go badgers, and keep it up. We're all very proud of your accomplishments this season, and are looking forward to a strong finish to 2013/2014.

GO BADGERS!
Badger Cheerleaders Performing Well!
The Big Springs Badger Cheerleaders began their season following Christmas Vacation, and have already participated in a Cheer Competition, Tournament, and Home Game.
The Badger Cheer Squad entered the Yreka Elks Cheer Competition on February 8th, and impressed the crowd with polished moves, great timing, and difficult stunts. In addition, the team cheered at two of the Boys games in that tournament, as well as our most recent home game on February 11th vs. Gazelle.
A major fundraiser will also take place on Friday, February 14th at the BSE Gymnasium with a special "Father-Daughter" Dinner and Dance. The event is scheduled to begin at 5pm and last until 7pm. Package deals are available for $40.00, with entrees including Chicken, Fish, or Steak available for dinner, a rose, and special Valentines Day photos of Father and Daughter. See a member of P.T.O. (Debbie Rodriguez, Kristi Apodaca, Melody Kinsey, or Suzie Cervelli), or Cheer Advisor / Coach Catie Allen for more details on the fundraiser.
The cheer season will continue as our squad will participate at our upcoming HOME finale vs. McCloud on Wednesday, February 19th. They will then compete at the MVL Tournament in Montague on February 21st and 22nd, and then travel to Crescent City to cheer on the boys and participate in one of the largest Cheer Competitions north of Sacramento. That tournament / competition in Crescent City is scheduled for March 7th and March 8th at Crescent Elks Middle School.
If you have an opportunity, check out this team in action. They are working hard and doing an outstanding job this season.

Girls Basketball playing impressively and making their mark!
The Lady Badgers continue to roll this season, extending their overall record to 11-4-1. However, since the Lady Badgers returned from their exhibition game vs. Grenada at Sleep Train Arena, they have an outstanding record of 8-1. That record includes their past two tournaments, as the Lady Badgers have earned awards with a 1st Place finish in the Badger Invitational and the Consolation award in the difficult Montague Invitational, which also included a competitive win vs. Gazelle and 1-point victory over our neighbor and rival Butteville.
This large group of girls, primarily made up of 5th and 7th graders, has made tremendous progress. They have played schools up to 8x larger than Big Springs, and teams of all 8th graders. In nearly every matchup, they have been competitive and shown outstanding progress.
With a league record of 3-0, the Lady Badgers have their sights set on the MVL Title for 2014. It will be a difficult road, with match ups against Shasta Valley (2-6-14), Gazelle (2-11-14), and a very strong McCloud Team (2-19-14). The postseason tournament is set for February 21st and February 22nd at Montague School, and will feature the entire M.V.L. Seeding for the tournament will depend on final records in league play.
Congratulations Badgers!
Congratulations to the Big Springs Badgers Boys Basketball Team for placing 2nd in the first annual Badger Invitational. And a HUGE Thank you to coaches Angie and Robin Lohman for their continued support and efforts with our boys team AND contributions to our entire sports/athletics program here at Big Springs.
Congratulations to the Big Springs Lady Badgers Basketball Team for bringing home FIRST PLACE in the inaugural Badger Invitational.
In addition to winning the tournament, the girls also received the coveted "Best Sportsmanship" award for attitude, behavior, and kindness. The award was based on more than a dozen criteria for both coaches and players.
A special THANK YOU to our assistant coach Kristi Apodaca, and to Debbie Rodriguez for all of her hard work with the concession stand.
Many others deserve recognition for their contributions with our inaugural tournament. Some of those include the following:
*Mr. Pindell, Kristi Apodaca, Debbie Rodriguez, Kori Hosler, Catie Allen, Robin Lohman, Angie Lohman, Melody Kinsey, Suzi Cervelli, Christina Dahmen, Dee Rizzo, Janet Thompson, Jesi Cookson, Juliette Charter, The Freeman Family, Ron Taylor, John Machado, the BSE Governing Board, Jane Faria, The Restine Family, The Whipple Family, and to all of our sponsors.
*The following sponsors helped to make our tournament possible. They include:

The following is an important announcement from College of the Siskiyous;
November 21, 2013
James Pindell
Big Springs Elementary
7405 HWY A-12
Montague CA 96064
[email protected]
College of the Siskiyous is excited to announce a change in processing registrations for K-12 students. Starting the Spring 2014 registration period (beginning November 18th), K-12 students will no longer need two pieces of documentation to register for classes.
The former green K-12 Special Admission Permit is now incorporated into the Enrollment/Registration form located on our website http://www.siskiyous.edu/apply/documents/regform.pdf .
Please note that signatures are still required from a parental unit and a school official. Students under the age of 16 will also still need instructor approval to take the course. Please destroy all old permits.
K-12 Special Admit students still do not have access to register online, but we are happy to receive your registration through mail, email ([email protected]), in person (9-3Monday through Thursday) or fax 938-5367.
Please let me know who will be designated from your school to sign off on the permit portion of the registration form. This makes it easier to efficiently process the forms. We will keep a database on file with the names of the designees so that both the Weed and Yreka staff are informed.
Thank you for your support of College of the Siskiyous!
Sincerely,

Attn: Parents of all BSE 6th - 8th Grade Students
Re: Required Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent / Teacher Conferences are NEXT week, from October 28th thru November 1st. All 6th - 8th Grade Students received his or her announcement and parent response form last Thursday, and students were given until Wednesday (October 23rd) to returned a signed form confirming the date/time of conferences. Mr. Hosler and Mrs. Charter will be conducting joint conferences for every 6th - 8th grade student, which amounts to more than 40 conferences after school next week. With such a large number of meetings, preplanning is critical and confirmation must occur prior to an expected conference taking place.
Every student received his or her conference form 1-week ago. However, any parent who has NOT yet received a Parent / Teacher Conference Request Form is strongly encouraged to contact their child's homeroom teacher as soon as possible, so that a conference can be confirmed or a request for a different date/time can be made. If you have any questions, you may contact the school and request a meeting / conference with Mrs. Charter or Mr. Hosler. Thank you.

Buddy Reading is BACK!
Mr. Hosler's Homeroom Class hosted our first "Buddy Reading" session of the 2013/2014 school year on Monday, September 9th. For the current school year, the class will host Mrs. Collier's preschool students twice each month on Monday mornings.
Each 7th or 8th grader is responsible for selecting 2-4 children's books a week prior to the scheduled Buddy Reading date. They are then given the responsibility of "memorizing" their books, so that they are prepared to seamlessly read each book aloud to his or her preschool buddy or buddies. Additionally, special techniques are covered as a class and in small groups that help to prepare our upper graders for the complexities and challenges that come with working with very young children.
As you can see, the rewards are obvious. The older students gain as much from the experience as the preschoolers do. Stay tuned for first-hand accounts and blogs from our 7th & 8th graders.

THANK YOU BSE COMMUNITY-
I wanted to take a moment to thank the entire Big Springs Community for welcoming my family and I to the area this year. My children absolutely love it up here, and my wife and I have really enjoyed the transition to the area. Having spent the past decade visiting immediate family during holidays and vacations, we are hardly new to the area. But 2012/2013 has been a wonderful transition for us, and we would like to thank everyone for such an outstanding year.

Alternate Activity Selected by Class of 2013
* Class of 2013 *
- Family BBQ Afternoon at Lake Siskiyou -
- Sunday, June 9th from 1:00pm - 4:00pm -
After learning last week that there would be no dance following graduation, Mr. Pindell offered to create an "alternate activity", to be decided upon by the Class of 2013. The students reviewed dozens of opportunities, ranging from dinner and a movie to attendance at a local water park. But after all was said and done, the 8th graders unanimously selected "An Afternoon at the Lake" for themselves AND their families.
On Sunday, June 9th, 2013, the Class of 2013 will be hosting a "Family BBQ & Afternoon at the Lake". All Class of 2013 graduates and their families are invited to attend the event, which will be held at Lake Siskiyou (North Shore), from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. This is a NON-DISTRICT SPONSORED EVENT, however food and drinks will be provided for all students and their immediate family members.
This event will be a Class of 2013 event only, meaning that only 8th graders (and their families) are invited. Please RSVP to Mr. Hosler (by/before noon on Wednesday, June 5th) by calling the school or via cell phone (530-514-8356). Please leave a message or send a text confirmation, stating whether your child will/will not be attending, along with an approximate head count. We must have a head count by Wednesday afternoon to ensure adequate yet responsible purchases of food & drinks are made. .
If you have any questions or comments, please contact Mr. Hosler or Mr. Pindell at the school. Thank you.
Special Recognition
Thank you John Schafer and the Yreka Raley's for their contributions to our Graduation. Mr. Schafer has arranged to have Raley's contribute this year's CAKE and PUNCH at the post ceremony celebration. We appreciate your effort, contributions, and the huge discount on quality products.
An additional note of appreciation to Ms. Kemp and the many 7th Graders for all of the hours of hard work this past week. During the past week, they have put in countless hours to ensure that all of the decorations, stage, and backdrop are just right. The kids have been a huge help, and Ms. Kemp has once again gone "above and beyond".

Any parent with questions or concerns about the Graduation Ceremony or an alternative class activity to replace the post-graduation dance may choose to: 1) attend Monday evening's meeting, 2) set up a 1-on-1 meeting with Mr. Pindell, or 3) schedule a meeting with Mr. Hosler after school on Monday between the hours of 3pm - 5pm or Tuesday following the Graduation Dress Rehearsal (scheduled for 3pm to 4pm).
Mr. Hosler is available by phone or email as well: email: [email protected] or school phone (530) 459-3189 or personal cell phone (530) 514-8356.
THE GRADUATION CEREMONY IS SET FOR 7:00PM ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5TH IN THE BSE GYM.
*Graduates must arrive BY 5:30PM for Pictures (Order Forms were sent home on Tuesday, May 28th)
Other Important Information Regarding The Class of 2013:
The Class of 2013 will hold graduation practice on Monday beginning at 10:00am, as well as most of the afternoon on Tuesday. The final "Dress Rehearsal" is scheduled for 3pm on Tuesday afternoon (they do NOT need to wear their gowns, suits, or dresses... It is just an expression), and should conclude by 4pm. We are not planning on practicing on Wednesday due to "Relay Recess" from 9:00am to 12:00pm. 8th Graders may be excused at noon on Wednesday with prior notification. However, Wednesday is the final day of the 2012/2013 school year and we will be having an end-of-year celebration in the classroom that afternoon (it is NOT a minimum day).
Please know that most/all of the pre-graduation work HAS ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED. For example:
The speaker has been selected and notified (selected by the Class of 2013 BEFORE they departed on their Class Trip on May 17th). The script for Graduation is set, and it follows tradition and past Big Springs ceremonies.
Flowers, Cake, Punch, Decorations, Awards, Diplomas, Tassels, and Gowns are Set/In-hand/Pressed/Signed/Delivered. Student speeches have been drafted, and set up in the Gym has already begun (as of Tuesday, May 28th). This graduation will be a special one, and we believe that all in attendance will be pleased.
We are still waiting on 3 families to provide photos of their graduates (see parent meeting notes, notes home & announcements posted on website). Mr. Hosler MUST have all photos delivered on disc or flash drive by 2:45PM MONDAY, JUNE 3RD at the absolute latest, or we may not be able to proceed with the special Slide Show/Movie. PLEASE CONTACT MR. HOSLER BEFORE MONDAY (530-514-8356) IF YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE PLACING THE PHOTOS OF YOUR CHILDREN ON A DISC OR FLASH DRIVE.
After learning that there will be no dance, the students are currently discussing possible alternatives (per Mr. Pindell). Please note that an alternate activity will be selected by the Class of 2013 as soon as possible (ideally before the end of the day on Monday, June 3rd). As soon as a decision has been made by the students (and approved by Mr. Pindell), notes will go home announcing the activity and information will be posted on this site (We understand the planning aspect of such a decision, and will communicate with everyone just as soon as possible).
Some of the ideas shared by the class include: *A Movie, *Dinner at a Nice Restaurant, *Dinner and a Movie, *A Day at the Lake, *An Afternoon at Jeter's Playground, etc.... It has been discussed that the approved activity may or may not include the 7th Grade Class. That decision will in large part depend on the activity/activities selected. *Please note that some of the items may not be feasible or permitted by Insurance, Mr. Pindell, or the District. However, Mr. Pindell has assured the class that they will be able to "have a nice alternative to the dance", as long as the idea is "reasonable". Whichever activity is chosen, it will be one selected by the CLASS OF 2013 STUDENTS (and approved by Mr. Pindell).
If you have ANY other questions, comments, ideas, or concerns, please bring them to the attention of Mr. Pindell or Mr. Hosler.

Top Honors Announced for Class of 2013
This year's graduating class is full of high achievers, many of whom have been on the high honor roll since 4th grade. During the past year alone, 75% of the Class of 2013 have achieved "Honor Roll" during one or more of the first three grading periods. And half of our graduates have earned a G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher in each of the past three quarters. Most are involved in leadership, sports, and various other co-curricular areas as well.
This year's 8th graders are all great people and it would have been easy to select half-a-dozen students as "Top Academic Students", and honor each as "Co-Valedictorians". However, in following tradition and in respect to our award winners, we must decide on only two students for these specific academic honors. The two selected students have more than earned the awards, and should feel especially honored given the high degree of competition for this year's recognition as top academic students.
Therefore, after much deliberation and discussion, we would like to publicly announce the Class of 2013 Valedictorian and Salutatorian:
Class of 2013 Valedictorian: Grace Jacobson
Class of 2013 Salutatorian: McKenzie Varga
Congratulations to two very deserving students, and to all of this year's graduates for a job well done! All of you should be proud. Please know that the Big Springs Staff are extremely proud of each of you, and all that you have accomplished during your elementary school career. This is truly a special class. Way to go Class of 2013!

Class of 2013 Parents and Students
Now that we are back in Siskiyou County following a marathon class trip, it is time to shift our attention to Graduation (which is just over TWO WEEKS AWAY!). The students have 11-days of school beginning with today, so attendance is quite important.
I will require each student to deliver their photos on a Disc/CD or USB so that I can upload them on to my computer for Graduation. Remember, I am requesting a minimum of 5 to 7 baby photos, an equal number of both toddler and early elementary photos, and another 8 to 10 photos of your child through the years. At least 20 photos of each student would be best, but no more than 40 please. I will be adding some additional pictures from this past year, and will make a copy of the slideshow/movie available to all parents of 8th Graders.
If you would like to assist and help me to track down photos for all students, or have ideas or suggestions for the movie, now is the time. I plan to move forward during Memorial Day weekend (4-days from now) and will accept photos up until Tuesday, May 28th at 3:00pm. Anything earlier would be appreciated, but not necessary.
Finally, I would like to share that our top academic students will be announced at the end of the day Friday (May 25th). Students will be expected to prepare a short speech, which I will be working on with them following the 3-day weekend.
We will have several 8th Grade Student-Teacher meetings during the next week, and plan to begin graduation practice on Friday, May 31st. The final 4-days of school will be critical in our preparation for Wednesday, June 5th's ceremony. Please do not allow your child to miss school, even though they are extremely fatigued. If you have concerns, please contact me on my cell phone (530) 514-8356.
Please see me if you have any other questions or concerns regarding graduation. I will be available Wednesday and Thursday after school. Thank you.

Special Student Recognition
Two Big Springs School Class of 2013 students were recognized on Friday, April 26th at a special Awards Dinner.
Liliana Trejo and McKenzie Varga were BOTH selected as the BSE "Mason Student of the Year" for 2013. The Yreka Masons recognized our two young ladies, as well as several other area 8th Graders. Each award winner was accompanied by parents and a teacher. All received an engraved plaque, and all were treated to a catered dinner and dessert. Big Springs Elementary was the only school to boast TWO winners.
Local students were chosen based on several criteria, including academics, athletics, leadership, citizenship, and overall service to the community. As their 8th Grade Teacher, I can honestly say that it was a pleasure to attend this event with both ladies and their parents. What wonderful families!
Both ladies represented our school very well, and made all Badgers proud. Congratulations to both Lili and McKenzie. We're proud of you!

GRADUATION UPDATE !
Graduation is planned for Wednesday, June 5th at 7:00pm in the BSE Gym. Photos will be BEFORE graduation, so 8th Graders need to plan to be at the school no later than 5:30pm that evening.
"At our last meeting": On Wednesday, May 1st, there was another Class of 2013 meeting. It was discussed and agreed upon that the Graduation Ceremony will keep with Big Springs tradition, and all recent/past practice events will be included in this year's ceremony. Special thanks to Ms. Dawn Kemp for all of her hard work in preparing a beautiful backdrop. Mrs. Helweg and Mr. Pindell also deserve special recognition for bringing me up to speed on past practice. This year's graduation should be a great one!
"SAVE THE DATE":On Wednesday, it was decided that we will hold a final graduation planning meeting on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00pm in the 7th/8th grade classroom. Parents will need to bring the student photos on a disc or flash drive. We're looking for 6-8 baby photos, 4-6 toddler photos, and another dozen or so from preschool thru this year. Parents who are unable to upload photos onto an electronic device may bring them to Mr. Hosler ahead of time, and he will assist you in creating an electronic copy of each photo.
"HELP WANTED": We are in need of parent helpers (preferably Class of 2014 parents) to assist Ms. Kemp with graduation set-up and clean-up. We will also request the assistance of several 7th Graders for various graduation activities. If you are interested in volunteering, please see Mr. Hosler or Ms. Kemp at your convenience. THANK YOU!
"Graduation Dance": The traditional Graduation Dance will take place immediately following the ceremony on Wednesday evening. Family and friends are invited to stay for the first hour, but the remaining time will be allocated for STUDENTS ONLY. Students permitted to stay for the remainder of the dance are current BSE 5th thru 8th Graders, BSE Class of 2012 Graduates, or students of neighboring Siskiyou County Schools in grades 5th thru 8th with PRIOR PERMISSION from Mr. Pindell. If you have any questions regarding the dance, please contact the office during normal school hours.

End of the 3rd Quarter / AR Update
Friday, March 15th marked the end of the 3rd Quarter grading period. The 4th Quarter began on Monday, March 18th.
Report Cards for all students (K-8) will be sent home by mail on Friday, March 22nd. Included with your child's academic progress, performance in core standards, and behavior ratings. Each child will also be receiving an updated Accelerated Reader performance review, which will accompany Report Cards. I am happy to share that although we have only had the program in place since February 1st, HALF of our class met or exceeded 100% of their goal for the 3rd Quarter. Several of our students even earned performance ratings exceeding 150% ! Although there was a ride range of success for the initial stages of the program, I am happy to share that each of our students in grades 7 & 8 participated fully, and each took multiple assessments on literature read during those 6-weeks (February 1 thru March 15).
Beginning with the 4th Quarter, each student has a new goal, and we encourage regular communication & performance updates throughout the grading period. Students who take a quiz are given a "TOPS REPORT", which includes all of the data on the book read, as well as an updated goal & percentage for the quarter. Ask your son or daughter to share these with you!
As usual, if anyone would like to meet to discuss their child's performance, behavior, or progress to date, I am available daily for conferencing (2:45pm - 5:45pm M-TH, 2:45pm - 4:15pm F, or later by appointment). I am not available for conferencing before school, but can make arrangements for special circumstances. Simply submit a request a date and time through our class webpage, contact the school,or feel free to call my cell phone or send me a text (530) 514-8356. I can usually meet on the day that you make contact.
Thank you for your continued support and regular communication. It does make a significant impact on your child's education.

8th Grade Financial Update & Upcoming Meeting on Wednesday, March 6th
This is just a reminder to all 8th Grade Parents and Students that there is a scheduled Class of 2013 meeting planned for 6:00pm on Wednesday, March 6th in Mr. Hosler's classroom. At this meeting, we will review an updated itinerary for the planned 8th Grade Trip (which is STILL being tweaked and adjusted).
We will also be putting together "Gift Baskets", to be used as a fundraiser at Thursday night's "Read Across America Family Reading Night". Items will be up for "Silent Auction", with proceeds going to the Class of 2013. Remember, it is not too late to donate an item, just bring it with you Wednesday evening.
Our 8th graders will go from our Class of 2013 meeting to the scheduled Board Meeting @ 7:00pm to hear suggestions from the board regarding the trip and planning process (The students will meet with Mr. Pindell FIRST, and discuss the itinerary with him prior to taking it to the School Board).
Additionally, Mr. Rodriguez (Parentt, PTO Treasurer, and BSE Governing Board Member), provided us with an up-to-date account balance at last night's PTO meeting. As of February 28th, the Class of 2013 has a balance of $2,358.96. This balance reflects a $1,300 payment to pay for the Worlds Finest Chocolate candy bars, but does not include profit from any of the Basketball Concession Stand earnings, any proceeds from the Valentines Day Candy Grams, or the remaining chocolate that has yet to be sold / proceeds collected.
As of March 5th, there are still 19-boxes of chocolate checked out to students, which reflects an anticipated profit of $950.00. The most up-to-date list of students / families who have money owed can be viewed in the office with Janet or Jesi.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Wednesday's meeting. Thank you for your support of the Class of 2013. GO BADGERS!

8th Grade Parents Step Up & Get The Job DONE!
A special THANK YOU to all of the parents / grandparents who came and helped the Class of 2013 with their Valentines Day fundraiser.
In just two short days, the 8th graders made nearly $175.00 on the Candy Gram sale, providing approximately 350 personalized notes, candy, and a special Valentines Day message.
We would like to thank the following parents and grandparents for donating their time AND energy to this fundraiser. THANK YOU to Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Varga, Mrs. Trejo, Mrs. Rizzo, and Mrs. Schafer. Also, thank you to Kim Varga, and Cece Trejo, and Breanna Croy for helping our 8th grade class.
Finally, great job to those 8th graders for their hard work and effort with this fundraiser. Emily, Emi, McKenzie, Lili, Conner, and Rudy all worked very hard to the job done! 6 of 8 students from the Class of 2013 worked through the night on Valentines Eve to fill their 350 orders. It is refreshing to have such dedicated students, willing and eager to work for their cause. There is no "entitlement" among this group, and it shows through the tremendous support from their parents.
Thank you Class of 2013 students, parents, grandparents, siblings, and other supporters. You are a wonderful example to us all!

Our Wonderful Parent Volunteers
Mrs. Rizzo, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Trejo, Mrs. Varga, and Mrs. Schafer work tirelessly in support of their children and grandchildren.
In addition to the several student volunteers, these parents assisted as part of a group of 18 who stayed late on the evening of February 13th and created the more than 350 Candy Grams.
The support of our students and staff at Big Springs Elementary School helped the Class of 2013 to raise nearly $175.00 to go towards their 8th Grade Trip.
To date, the Class of 2013 has raised nearly $3,500 for their trip, scheduled to take place after STAR Testing in May.

COLD & FLU SEASON...
During the past few days, we have seen quite a few students (especially in both the 5th/6th grade class and 7th/8th grade class), out with flu-like symptoms. Dozens more are attending school with common cold symptoms. It is important however, to understand that you and your family can stay healthy and drastically reduce your chances of becoming ill, all by following a few simple rules.
The first and most effective way to combat illness is by washing your hands. One should wash a minimum of ten times each day, including before and after eating, both before and after using the restroom, before and after touching any part of your face, and immediately after any recreational activity, such as Cheerleading or Basketball.
Also, keeping your hands and fingers away from your mouth, eyes, and nose can prevent illness. Eating healthy and getting exercise also keep your body healthy and able to fight off bacteria and viruses alike. Drinking at least eight glasses of water each day helps to flush your system and keep you hydrated. Dehydration is dangerous and can be deadly, especially for young babies and the elderly.
Finally, it is important to point out that children between the ages 10 and 16 require a MINIMUM of 10-hours each and every night. Some require more, but in most cases, a pre-teen / teenager requires up to 20% MORE SLEEP than an average nine-year-old!
So, be sure to 1. WASH YOUR HANDS, 2. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE (eyes, mouth, nose), 3. EAT HEALTHY, 4. EXERCISE, and 5. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP.
Be sure to discuss these items and other options (such as a vaccination), with your family doctor or health care provider.

Lady Badgers Look Sharp; Get Victory in First Game of Season
It was a hard fought game against a strong rival, but in the end the Big Springs Badgers showed that hard work does pay off. Winning game #1 by a score of 10-8, a true team effort helped these girls to a victory over a much larger school, Montague.
After going down 6-0 in the first quarter of play, the girls put aside nervous feelings and some serious butterflies to give the Montague Trojans all that they could handle. After 3-weeks of exhausting drills and painful exercises, the Lady Badgers helped to prove that hard work really does pay off. Executing a stingy defense and playing a ball control style of offense, the Badgers made the Trojans play to their strategy.
Thanks in large part to a few seasoned veteran eighth graders in Emily Smith, Emily Schafer, and Liliana Trejo, the Big Springs Lady Badgers roared back from the 6-point deficit to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. Scoring 10 consecutive points was all that the girls would need, as outstanding defensive play from sixth graders Trinity Apodaca, Cece Trejo, and Maryssa Rodriguez paved the way for the victory.
Key contributions from Amber Ryan, Grace Jacobson, Cindy Wells, and Delaney Whipple kept the Lady Badgers fresh and on their toes, and were key players through countless substitutions. Young and talented rookies round out the team and are gaining valuable experience. A supporting cast of Juliet C., Sarah F., Faith P., Madison R., kept up the spirits of the entire team, and played strong when given their opportunities, no matter how brief. One of those rookie cast members; Annie Klepach, also raised a few eyebrows. She dominated her competition on the boards en route to scoring her very first points; which also happened to be on the first shot of her rookie campaign. That basket by Annie was the game tying score late in the second quarter, and the team fed off of that momentum for the duration of the game.
Important plays from Amber and Trinity as well helped to get the team back on track in the second quarter and keep momentum on our side throughout the second half. A commitment to team basketball, with an emphasis on sportsmanship, attention to detail, hard work, and hustle, all of these girls showed just what it takes to be winners, win or lose, no matter the score or outcome.
Although each of the Lady Badgers contributed to the win, without a doubt, the most dominant player for the girls from tipoff to buzzer was Breanna Croy. Her leadership, attitude, hustle, and overall execution of the game plan was critical to the team's success in game #1. Breanna had a wonderful game, and the effort demonstrated was second to none.
The Lady Badgers are now 1-0 on the season, and will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday morning at 11:00am against one of the best teams in the area, Sission. Sission crushed Gazelle in round #1 by a score of 30-1, and will be a difficult matchup for the Badgers. Depending on that game, round #3 will have the girls playing at either 4:00pm (3rd Place Game), or at 8:00pm (Championship Game). Come support your team at Jackson Street School in the 2012 Elks Tournament.
Congratulations on the Big Springs Lady Badgers first win of 2012/2013. If the Montague game is any indication of how the team will play this year, there will be plenty of victory celebrations in the coming months. Great job, and GO BADGERS!

Buddy Reading A HUGE Success! December 3rd event "Awesome".
Since mid September, the 7th & 8th grade class have been working closely with the preschool on "Buddy Reading", a program designed to allow our older students the experience as "Crossed Age Tutors", while introducing the basic fundamentals of reading to some of our youngest children at Big Springs Elementary. The program has been a HUGE success, earning stellar reviews from all of our students, staff, and parents.
Below are some highlights from the program's most recent event on December 3rd. When asked how he liked reading with his "Big Buddy", Preschool student Nolan responded; "It's AWESOME"!
Trinity & Sheldon
Trinity and her Buddy Reading partner Sheldon
Trinity and her "buddy" Sheldon discuss the finer points of literature. Sheldon appears "deep in thought".
Trinity's point of view:
"Today in Buddy reading, I read with Sheldon. Sheldon and I read by rocks on Mr. Hosler's desk. We read 'A Bad Case Of The Stripes', by Davis Shannon. This book is about a girl that cares too much about what other kids thought of her but learned that it doesn't matter."
Trinity is one of three 6th grade students participating in the Buddy Reading Program. She is able to participate with the 7th/8th grade class, due to the scheduling of other courses. She has been a welcome addition to the class, as the young preschool students look forward to having her as their partner. Great job Trinity!

McKenzie & Kegan
McKenzie and her Buddy Reading partner Kegan, reading enthusiastically!
McKenzie and Kegan enjoyed the activities today. Both have wonderful enthusiasm and it was obvious that each of them were feeding off of the other's energy.
McKenzie's Perspective:
"Today, my buddy reading partner was Kegan. We read 'Aladdin' and 'Rainbow Fish' and 'The Big Blue Whale'. My buddy wasn't very talkative. He finally got really talkative at the end when we were talking about the zoo."
Tass & Reagan
Tass and his Buddy Reading partner Reagan, enjoying their book.
Tass & Reagan, by Tass
"My buddy Reagan: Reagan was kind and shy. We went into the computer lab to read. We sat next to Conner, who was helping me read.
She was a good listener. She focused on the words and the pictures. She liked Strawberry the Shortcake the best. She knew that the text went from front to back and from left to right.
She knows what Hot Chocolate is. Her favorite sibling is Sissy McKenna. She lives the color Pink. Her eye color is blue/green."

Amber & Hailee

"Today with my buddy it went good. Karissa loved the book 'Across The Steam Twice'. The book is about a mother hen with her three babies getting across the stream on ducks. They escaped a fox.
I asked Carmine to come and sit with me and Karissa and read, and he did. He was very quiet." - Aliza.
"I read two books to my buddy Hailee. The two books were called 'Dog For A Day' and 'Rainbow Fish and The Big Blue Whale'. I think she enjoyed those two books.
I also borrowed 'Little Mermaid' from McKenzie. Hailee enjoyed that book too. I really enjoyed reading to her". - Amber

Buddy Reading Update...
The 7th and 8th Grade Students working on a short essay, describing their morning activity. On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, each of the 7th and 8th graders worked with a preschooler on "Buddy Reading", a program designed to encourage literacy among our youngest students.
The program has been a huge success. Students spend a great deal of time researching appropriate books, sharing their opinions on whether or not the preschool students enjoyed each book shared, and assisting the preschool staff in monitoring and assessing student growth in literacy skills.
The program runs twice each month. Every other Monday, the preschool class walks to the main campus, and students are paired up (one 7th/8th grader with one preschooler), at random. The students have participated nearly a half-dozen times thus far, and plan to take Buddy Reading to the next level during the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
This winter, students in the 7th/8th grade will learn about his or her buddy, including their likes and dislikes. their families, and personal interests. Taking this information, and applying it to their favorite children's books, each older student will write a children's book, about his or her buddy. These books will be sent of to a publisher, and in the spring, each preschool student will be presented with their very own book, written and published by their "buddy".
For more information about the program, please contact the preschool or Mr. Hosler.

Cheerleading Update, as of Tuesday, November 13, 2012...
On Tuesday, November 13th, information went home regarding our 2012/2013 Cheerleading Program. Beginning on Monday, November 26th, the program will begin with annual tryouts and include interested students (Boys & Girls) in grades 5th thru 8th.
On Wednesday, November 7th, the Governing Board of Big Springs Union Elementary School District approved a "year-to-year" Cheer Program Stipend, which will fully fund/support the program in 2012/2013, and revisit the program annually. This means that the program will operate as it did last year, with no cutbacks and a fully paid coaching position. As was the case last year, students may participate in both Basketball AND Cheerleading!
*Interested students must attend tryouts (beginning Monday, November 26th), and all practices (beginning in December), remain academically eligible for the entire season (minimum 2.0 GPA and no failing grades), and have their 2012/2013 physicals completed prior to the first basketball game. Each participating student must be cleared to play by his or her teacher, and appropriate behavior at both school and practice/games is an important factor in determining eligibility.
Please review your handouts, and contact Mr. Hosler or Mr. Pindell if you have any questions. Thank you for your support, cooperation, and understanding with this process. We appreciate all of the feedback, from students and parents alike.

THANK YOU to all of the 8th Grade Parents
The 8th Grade Class did VERY WELL with their Fundraisers on October 20th. The class raised $839.66 with their Recycling Fundraiser, and another $288.00 at the Volleyball Tournament Concession Stand. A special THANK YOU to Mrs. Smith for helping, working, and organizing the fundraisers, and to all of the other parents who helped as well. Mr. Berg, Mr. Schafer, Mrs. Varga, Mrs. Trejo, and Mrs. Rizzo were HUGE in helping the day to be such a success. A great job to all of the participating 8th graders as well, as there was 100% participation, with all nine students donating their time and working the events. Many in this group were here at the school before 7am, and stayed until well after 8pm.
We will be having a parent meeting during the week of November 13th to discuss the next fundraiser (Krispy Kreme), which will take place after Thanksgiving. There will also be a Candy Bar Sale during Christmas Vacation. Watch for letters to come home on 11-8-12. Please call Mr. Hosler if you would like to help organize the event, or see Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Varga for details.
