Dear Parents of BSES A and B Volleyball Teams,
On Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013, we have away volleyball games vs. McCloud @ McCloud High School. The A-Team is scheduled to begin promptly @ 5:00pm, and the B-Team will play immediately after (probably around 6:00pm?). We should return to Big Springs Elementary between 7:30pm – 8:30pm; however, exact times are impossible to predict and could be much earlier or later?
If you are able to transport students we must have your driving / transportation information on file in the office (if you have any questions about this requirement, please see Janet, Jesi, or Mr. Pindell at your convenience).
Additionally, we thank all athletes, families, and friends in advance for their outstanding sportsmanship and for representing Big Springs Elementary School in a positive way.
All volleyball team members must return the bottom portion of this note by/before practice on TUESDAY, October 1st. Please see Coach Hosler if you have any questions, or feel free to contact him on his personal cell phone at (530) 514-8356.

Way to go Badger Volleyball Teams!
The week of September 23rd was a big one for the Big Springs Badger Volleyball Teams. Both squads hosted TWO games, and the results are worth sharing.
On Wednesday, Golden Eagle came to Big Springs and both squads played admirably. The A-Team was able to win 3-games in just four contests, while the B-Team needed extra points, overtime, and a fifth game to decide the contest. At the end of the day, the A-Teams record had improved to 2-1, while the B-Team lost a closely contested exhibition and saw their record fall to 0-3.
Thursday was a different story. Castle Rock came to Big Springs, and prior to the A-Team game, the capacity crowd seemed awestruck by the size, skill, and speed of the visiting team. The opening serves matched that intimidation; however, once the Badgers got going, there was no looking back. Led by 8th grade standouts Breanna Croy and Zion Parker, the home team battled back to win games 1 and 2, before losing game #3.
Defining a TEAM EFFORT, the Badgers battled back from a game #3 loss and won the 4th game. Watching their record improve to 3-1 and a share of FIRST PLACE in the M.V.L. by the end of the week was a nice bonus for the Badgers.
The B-Team followed suit by matching the A-Teams pattern. Winning games 1 and 2 were awesome to watch, and after surrendering game #3 to the visiting Castle Rock team, the Badgers battled back to win the contest by claiming game #4. Both teams were able to achieve victory on the same night for the first time this season, and the Badgers seem well on their way to continuing their excellent seasons.
The A-Team is now 3-1, and will face McCloud at their Gym on Wednesday, October 2nd. Our B-Team is 1-3, and play on October 2nd following the A-Team's game that Wednesday.
Our final home contests of the 2013 season will see the Badgers host Gazelle on October 9th at 5:15pm (A-Team) & 6:15pm (B-Team). The season concludes on Saturday, October 19th at Dunsmuir, where the A-Team will battle the rest of the M.V.L. for this year's LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP!
Way to go BADGERS! We're proud of you.

Meet your 2013 Badger Volleyball Teams
The 2013 BSE Badgers have looked strong and confident heading in to the 2013 season. With only a single player returning from last season's "A-Team", this group is raw in terms of experience, but easily make up for it with heart, determination, skill, and aggression.
After beginning the season 1-1, the Badgers host TWO opponents next week. Game times/days are available on the "Volleyball Schedule" link.

The 2013 BSE Badgers "B-Team" is progressing each day, and are a great group of student-athletes. Although their record thus far in MVL play is 0-2, the Badgers have kept every game close, and could easily be 2-0 with a good bounce here or there.
With a focus on "Team Play", this group cares about one another beyond the court. Always willing to work hard and work together, this group has a very bright future. The B-Team will look to even their record at 2-2 with two home games next week (see the schedule on this site).

Congratulations to both the A & B teams for their outstanding opening games of the 2013 Volleyball Season. Last night, the Badgers opened up the season at home vs. Shasta Valley. The A-Team defeated the Wolves 3-0, while the B-Team lost 2-1.

TRACK UPDATE
Track season is in full swing! More than 30-students in grades 4th thru 8th are participating in events such as the 100m, 200m, 440m, 880m, 1600m, Hurdles, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, 4x100m, and the 4x200m.
Big Springs had a fantastic showing at our 2013 Kickoff Track Meet at Mt. Shasta High School. Sission sponsored a local Middle School Track Meet on Friday, April 19th, where more than 400 local athletes participated in 13 various events in four separate age/gender categories. More than a dozen local schools participated, and BSE had a very strong showing, with athletes participating in nearly every event.
Student-Athletes were offered an opportunity to participate in an unlimited number of events. The local High School track stars from Mt. Shasta High School ran the events, which were coordinated by Middle School and High School staff. What an impressive event!
On Thursday, May 2nd, our Track Team attended a special event at Yreka High School. Several of their athletes ran event clinics for local schools, and once again, our athletes had an opportunity to learn from older students. What a wonderful community!
Track Season continues on Saturday, May 4th as the Yreka Elks Track Meet hosts their annual invitational at Yreka High School. Events begin at 10:00am, and continue throughout the day.
We have also been invited by C.O.S. to attend one of their practices and learn from some top tier athletes. Final details will be ironed out soon, but we plan to attend during one of our scheduled practices, one day between May 7th & May 14th. Locally, it is a short season, so the extra event will be appreciated.
There is also a Track Meet scheduled for Saturday, May 11th at Yreka High School. *More information to follow from Coach Weed!
Our final event of 2013 is the annual MVL Track Meet. *Please note the information just received from our League President:
The Mountain Valley League Meet will be on Thursday May 16, at Yreka High School Track.

Congratulations to our Lady Badger Basketball Team
Congratulations to the Lady Badgers, who won SECOND PLACE in both MVL League Play and at the MVL Tournament. It was a great season, and excitement continues to build for this very young, yet experienced team. 2013/2014 & 2014/2015 will be interesting, as many of our key players from this season were only 6th graders.

Each team may play a second game on Friday, and will play at least one additional game on Saturday. All Boys Basketball Players and Cheerleaders must arrive @ McCloud’s Gym suited up and prepared to play no later than 11:00am on Friday, while Girls Basketball Players must arrive no later than 12:00pm. *Please view the Tournament Bracket to determine possible game days, times, and opponents for our second (and possible third) games. We are very much in need of parent / adult drivers, both to transport students from Big Springs to the games at McCloud on Friday morning, and then again home from their school to Big Springs following Friday game(s). Because of the large number of students participating in the 11:00am game, we are scheduled to depart Big Springs at 10:15am on Friday, February 22nd. Other departure times and transportation arrangements will be determined during the course of the weekend based on results from the tournament.
If you are able to transport students other than your own child, we must have your driving / transportation information on file in the office (if you have any questions about this requirement, please see Janet, Jesi, or Mr. Pindell at your convenience), or call the school @ (530) 459-3189 between 7:00am and 4:00pm, M-F.
Additionally, we thank all players, families, and friends in advance for their outstanding sportsmanship and for representing Big Springs Elementary School in a positive way. Priority number one for the weekend is to have our school represented as a positive, respectful, and supportive environment for our students and their opponents.
All basketball players and cheerleaders must return the bottom portion of this note by/before Thursday, February 21st, 2013. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s coach, or call Mr. Hosler (Girls Basketball Coach and designated Athletic Director), @ (530) 459-3189, ext. #307 (school) or @ (530) 514-8356 (cell). Lady Badgers Look Sharp; Get Victory in First Game of Season
It was a hard fought game against a strong rival, but in the end the Big Springs Badgers showed that hard work does pay off. Winning game #1 by a score of 10-8, a true team effort helped these girls to a victory over a much larger school, Montague.
After going down 6-0 in the first quarter of play, the girls put aside nervous feelings and some serious butterflies to give the Montague Trojans all that they could handle. After 3-weeks of exhausting drills and painful exercises, the Lady Badgers helped to prove that hard work really does pay off. Executing a stingy defense and playing a ball control style of offense, the Badgers made the Trojans play to their strategy.
Thanks in large part to a few seasoned veteran eighth graders in Emily Smith, Emily Schafer, and Liliana Trejo, the Big Springs Lady Badgers roared back from the 6-point deficit to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. Scoring 10 consecutive points was all that the girls would need, as outstanding defensive play from sixth graders Trinity Apodaca, Cece Trejo, and Maryssa Rodriguez paved the way for the victory.
Key contributions from Amber Ryan, Grace Jacobson, Cindy Wells, and Delaney Whipple kept the Lady Badgers fresh and on their toes, and were key players through countless substitutions. Young and talented rookies round out the team and are gaining valuable experience. A supporting cast of Juliet C., Sarah F., Faith P., Madison R., kept up the spirits of the entire team, and played strong when given their opportunities, no matter how brief. One of those rookie cast members; Annie Klepach, also raised a few eyebrows. She dominated her competition on the boards en route to scoring her very first points; which also happened to be on the first shot of her rookie campaign. That basket by Annie was the game tying score late in the second quarter, and the team fed off of that momentum for the duration of the game.
Important plays from Amber and Trinity as well helped to get the team back on track in the second quarter and keep momentum on our side throughout the second half. A commitment to team basketball, with an emphasis on sportsmanship, attention to detail, hard work, and hustle, all of these girls showed just what it takes to be winners, win or lose, no matter the score or outcome.
Although each of the Lady Badgers contributed to the win, without a doubt, the most dominant player for the girls from tipoff to buzzer was Breanna Croy. Her leadership, attitude, hustle, and overall execution of the game plan was critical to the team's success in game #1. Breanna had a wonderful game, and the effort demonstrated was second to none.
The Lady Badgers are now 1-0 on the season, and will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday morning at 11:00am against one of the best teams in the area, Sission. Sission crushed Gazelle in round #1 by a score of 30-1, and will be a difficult matchup for the Badgers. Depending on that game, round #3 will have the girls playing at either 4:00pm (3rd Place Game), or at 8:00pm (Championship Game). Come support your team at Jackson Street School in the 2012 Elks Tournament.
Congratulations on the Big Springs Lady Badgers first win of 2012/2013. If the Montague game is any indication of how the team will play this year, there will be plenty of victory celebrations in the coming months. Great job, and GO BADGERS!
