About Mr. Hosler...
My name is Jacob (Jake) Hosler, and I was born and raised in northern California. I married my "high school sweetheart" 12-years ago. Together, Kori & I have three beautiful children. Hayden (9), Nolan (6), and Marissa (4) are all part of the Big Springs Family, and participate in the local youth soccer league in Lake Shastina. Kori is a retired High School Math Teacher. Hayden attends Big Springs School as a 4th grade student, and Nolan as a 1st grade student. Marissa is next door and attends the Big Springs Preschool and Childcare program. Personally and professionally, there is nothing more important to me than these four people!
In my free time... I am an avid motorsports fan (NHRA and Drag Boat Racing), and diehard San Jose Sharks fan, and a humble St. Louis Rams fan. I enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, and taking my three young children to parks and beaches.
I was born in Redding and grew up in Red Bluff. At a young age, I realized that I wanted to work with children as part of the public school system. I graduated from Red Bluff High School, and later attended Butte Community College as a student-athlete, while I worked for Tehama Bank in increasingly more responsible positions. I simultaneously earned a full-ride football scholarship to Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and continued my education and football career at that location.
Realizing that I would be unable to obtain a degree from Northeastern due to the commitment required by their football program, I transferred to Humboldt State University, also on a football scholarship. I obtained my degree from Humboldt State in 2002, and despite recruitment by a National Football League team and lucrative offers from several banking institutions, I chose to pursue my childhood dream and pursue a career in education. I began substitute teaching that year, and obtained my teaching credential from Chico State University in 2003. In June of 2003, I was hired as an elementary teacher in a self-contained, multi-grade classroom at Manton School. In 2005, I was promoted to Principal at Manton School. I obtained my K-12 Administrative Credential from Chico State later that year, and was then promoted to Superintendent/Principal.
During my 5-year tenure at Manton School, I worked my way up the small school ladder, beginning as a teacher and eventually earning the title of Superintendent/Principal/Teacher. In Manton, I feel that I made a difference; having successfully revived an inactive GATE program, created and implemented a successful music program, established a climate for an involved parent group, led in the development of a successful District Booster Club, and created a collaborative joint district after-school program through which we shared academic and extracurricular resources.
As an instructional leader, I taught and supervised after-school remediation classes to underperforming students, served as head coach for both boy’s and girl’s basketball teams, head coach for girl’s volleyball, head coach for co-ed softball, head coach for boy’s and girl’s track, and head coach for co-ed hockey. Additionally, I was responsible for all extracurricular fund-raising for the district; and served as 8th Grade Class Advisor, School Newspaper Advisor, Yearbook Advisor and Student Council Advisor. I was honored to be recognized by the Tehama County Charter of ACSA as the 2007/2008 Tehama County Superintendent/Principal of the Year.
Additionally, from 2005 thru 2010, I served as the Tehama County Small Schools Teacher Group Facilitator, which required me to meet with county staff on a monthly basis to plan and coordinate meetings for teachers from nine separate districts. I led a group of more than 25 Tehama County teachers in quarterly meetings in discussions and activities designed to improve classroom instruction in the small school setting. Focused on collaboration with an emphasis on best practices and sharing resources, I led an effort to improve instruction amongst our smallest county schools, providing professional development in our small, rural schools.
In the summer of 2008, I was recruited and later accepted an offer of employment at Reeds Creek School District as their Superintendent/Principal. In just under four years, the district experienced tremendous success in the areas of academic achievement, student curricular and co-curricular activities, and budgetary / fiscal responsibility.
During my tenure, Reeds Creek's API has rose from 739 in 2009 to 834 in 2012, leading all Tehama County Schools in growth in 2010 and 2011 . I worked with staff and other local schools, as we created a school-wide learning center, where all students were able to learn at a data driven ability level.
Additionally, as Athletic Director & Class Trip Coordinator, through my leadership many students were able to participate in unbelievable activities. I have personally organized fundraisers and led student trips to Arco Arena for student basketball games & activities with the Sacramento Kings, San Jose Arena for student hockey games & activities with the San Jose Sharks, and Washington D.C. for nearly a decade of 8th grade trips. Staying involved in coaching and teaching reaffirmed WHY I wanted to get into education, and was a significant part in my transition to Big Springs and my family's relocation to Lake Shastina in the summer of 2012. With years of experience in the classroom, as an administrator, on the field of play, and on the court, I am thrilled to return as a Badger.
During the past 2-1/2 years, I have transitioned to Siskiyou County to take on this new adventure. As the 7th/8th Grade Homeroom Teacher, as well as the Middle School Math and Science Teacher at Big Springs School, I am back in the classroom for my third year at Big Springs Elementary, and as excited as ever to be working with young people. During the 2014/2015 school year, I do have some additional duties. I will serve as the District's Athletic Director, AR Facilitator, Math "Common Core" Coordinator & Instructional Coach, 8th Grade Class Advisor, and Girls Basketball Coach. With a wonderful family behind me and the opportunity to work with a first-rate staff, I am truly excited about the 2014/2015 school year.
