MVL Tournament Information for February 22nd & February 23rd
Wednesday, February 20, 2013
Dear Parents of BSES BOYS & GIRLS Basketball Players and Cheerleaders,
On Friday, February 22nd & Saturday, February 23rd, we have away basketball games @ McCloud High School as part of our season ending MVL Playoff Tournament. Both of our Boys and Girls Basketball Teams, as well as our Cheerleaders, will participate in the annual MVL Tournament.
Our Boys team is scheduled to play Game #1 at 12:00pm on FRIDAY, with our Girls team scheduled to play Game #1 at 1:00pm on FRIDAY. Each team may play a second game on Friday, and will play at least one additional game on Saturday. All Boys Basketball Players and Cheerleaders must arrive @ McCloud’s Gym suited up and prepared to play no later than 11:00am on Friday, while Girls Basketball Players must arrive no later than 12:00pm. *Please view the Tournament Bracket to determine possible game days, times, and opponents for our second (and possible third) games. All participating athletes are asked to arrive and check in with his or her coach a minimum of ONE HOUR BEFORE GAME TIME, dressed down and prepared for competition. Exceptions may be made with advance notice only. Late athletes who do not communicate with his or her coach may be excluded from competition.
We are very much in need of parent / adult drivers, both to transport students from Big Springs to the games at McCloud on Friday morning, and then again home from their school to Big Springs following Friday game(s). Because of the large number of students participating in the 11:00am game, we are scheduled to depart Big Springs at 10:15am on Friday, February 22nd. Other departure times and transportation arrangements will be determined during the course of the weekend based on results from the tournament.
If you are able to transport students other than your own child, we must have your driving / transportation information on file in the office (if you have any questions about this requirement, please see Janet, Jesi, or Mr. Pindell at your convenience), or call the school @ (530) 459-3189 between 7:00am and 4:00pm, M-F.
Additionally, we thank all players, families, and friends in advance for their outstanding sportsmanship and for representing Big Springs Elementary School in a positive way. Priority number one for the weekend is to have our school represented as a positive, respectful, and supportive environment for our students and their opponents.
All basketball players and cheerleaders must return the bottom portion of this note by/before Thursday, February 21st, 2013. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s coach, or call Mr. Hosler (Girls Basketball Coach and designated Athletic Director), @ (530) 459-3189, ext. #307 (school) or @ (530) 514-8356 (cell). Thank you, and GO BADGERS!

Congratulations Big Springs Lady Badgers
It was a great opening weekend in Yreka, as the Lady Badgers played hard and showed tremendous improvement. Although they finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, the girls finished by taking 4th place in a tournament that showcased some of the toughest competition in the county.
On Saturday morning, the girls played Sission and nearly pulled out the victory. Trailing by only one basket early in the 4th quarter, Sission (who have been playing for nearly 3-months already) pulled away in the end to win by a score of 20-12.
The second game on Saturday was quite different for the Lady Badgers, as Weed jumped out to a large lead in the first half. Although the final score was not close, our girls showed resilience and character as they competed to the final buzzer. Losing 22-6 to a Weed team with much more experience, the girls, although upset about the loss, took away a great sense of pride at the progress made during the weekend.
The Lady Badgers will now face a long gap between games, and their next contest is scheduled for January 10th, nearly a month from now. However, if the girls continue to progress as they have thus far, there should be plenty of victories to come.

Lady Badgers Look Sharp; Get Victory in First Game of Season
It was a hard fought game against a strong rival, but in the end the Big Springs Badgers showed that hard work does pay off. Winning game #1 by a score of 10-8, a true team effort helped these girls to a victory over a much larger school, Montague.
After going down 6-0 in the first quarter of play, the girls put aside nervous feelings and some serious butterflies to give the Montague Trojans all that they could handle. After 3-weeks of exhausting drills and painful exercises, the Lady Badgers helped to prove that hard work really does pay off. Executing a stingy defense and playing a ball control style of offense, the Badgers made the Trojans play to their strategy.
Thanks in large part to a few seasoned veteran eighth graders in Emily Smith, Emily Schafer, and Liliana Trejo, the Big Springs Lady Badgers roared back from the 6-point deficit to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. Scoring 10 consecutive points was all that the girls would need, as outstanding defensive play from sixth graders Trinity Apodaca, Cece Trejo, and Maryssa Rodriguez paved the way for the victory.
Key contributions from Amber Ryan, Grace Jacobson, Cindy Wells, and Delaney Whipple kept the Lady Badgers fresh and on their toes, and were key players through countless substitutions. Young and talented rookies round out the team and are gaining valuable experience. A supporting cast of Juliet C., Sarah F., Faith P., Madison R., kept up the spirits of the entire team, and played strong when given their opportunities, no matter how brief. One of those rookie cast members; Annie Klepach, also raised a few eyebrows. She dominated her competition on the boards en route to scoring her very first points; which also happened to be on the first shot of her rookie campaign. That basket by Annie was the game tying score late in the second quarter, and the team fed off of that momentum for the duration of the game.
Important plays from Amber and Trinity as well helped to get the team back on track in the second quarter and keep momentum on our side throughout the second half. A commitment to team basketball, with an emphasis on sportsmanship, attention to detail, hard work, and hustle, all of these girls showed just what it takes to be winners, win or lose, no matter the score or outcome.
Although each of the Lady Badgers contributed to the win, without a doubt, the most dominant player for the girls from tipoff to buzzer was Breanna Croy. Her leadership, attitude, hustle, and overall execution of the game plan was critical to the team's success in game #1. Breanna had a wonderful game, and the effort demonstrated was second to none.
The Lady Badgers are now 1-0 on the season, and will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday morning at 11:00am against one of the best teams in the area, Sission. Sission crushed Gazelle in round #1 by a score of 30-1, and will be a difficult matchup for the Badgers. Depending on that game, round #3 will have the girls playing at either 4:00pm (3rd Place Game), or at 8:00pm (Championship Game). Come support your team at Jackson Street School in the 2012 Elks Tournament.
Congratulations on the Big Springs Lady Badgers first win of 2012/2013. If the Montague game is any indication of how the team will play this year, there will be plenty of victory celebrations in the coming months. Great job, and GO BADGERS!

Note for Parents Regarding Expectations of Girls Team
@ Tournament & Entire 2012/2013 Basketball Season.
Wednesday, December 5, 2012
Dear Parents of BSE Girls Basketball Players,
The Big Springs Badger Girls will play in the Yreka Elks Tournament this coming weekend, Friday, December 7th and Saturday, December 8th.
The tournament will include twelve teams participating in two divisions. We will participate in the "B" Division and are set to play in an 8-team bracket.
Our first opponent will be Montague on Friday at 4:30pm. We will then play TWO games on Saturday, with game times and opponents being determined by the outcome of each game. Possible opponents for Saturday include Sission OR Gazelle in the second round at either 9:00am OR 11:00am.
Our third and final game time and opponent will be determined later that morning. The other four participating teams include Weed, Shasta Valley, Dunsmuir, and Yreka. Final round game times are as follows: 7th Place @ 2:00pm, 3rd Place @ 4:00pm, Consolation @ 6:00pm, and the Championship Game @ 8:00pm.
All games will be @ : Jackson Street School, 405 Jackson Street, Yreka, CA 96097 (http://www.yrekausd.net/Jackson_Street/)
All athletes are asked to arrive at the tournament a minimum of ONE HOUR before each scheduled game. This is because all scheduled game times are approximate, and in many cases, games will begin EARLIER than indicated on the bracket. *Exceptions may be made, only if a discussion occurs beforehand with Coach Hosler, and specific permission is given for student-athletes to arrive later than 1-hour before the game.
A tournament bracket was sent home with each student-athlete on Friday, November 30th. Additional copies are available after practice, or will be in Mr. Hosler's classroom before or after school on Thursday.
The following link may be cut/pasted for driving directions to the tournament from BSE: http://www.mapquest.com/#ea76346076ce3c980fadcfaf
Expectations for the tournament and our upcoming basketball season.
“The Team Comes First! There are no individuals. RESPECT BY ALL IS A MUST. We are all here for the kids; to provide a POSITIVE learning experience. We expect everyone to WORK HARD, WORK TOGETHER, AND HAVE FUN!” There will be zero tolerance of negativity: by coaches, players, parents, or other stakeholders.
Playing time, team philosophy and operations of the team will be determined by the Head Coach, Mr. Hosler. Players will NOT receive “equal” playing time, and there may be several instances where student-athletes do not play in a game, or see a very limited about of playing time. The coaching staff will make decisions that are in the best interest of ALL PLAYERS, and base playing time off of: 1) Attitude, 2) Effort, 3) Hustle, 4) Knowledge & Execution of the TEAM Game Plan, 5) Attendance @ Practice, Games, & Meetings, 6) Being a TEAM Player, 7) Being Coachable, 8) Age / Grade, 9) Basketball Awareness, 10) Ability / Individual Improvement. Other areas may be assessed and factored into playing time in practice & games as well.
Please note that individual playing time will vary, and is NOT guaranteed. Decisions regarding playing time are entirely left to the discretion of the coach. If you would like to discuss your child, please see Coach Hosler during an appropriate time (not during practice or a game, or immediately after a practice or game has ended). Before practice begins or during a scheduled appointment are the most appropriate times to discuss your child's performance / progress / playing time.
Student Transportation & Meal Options
Our designated team drivers will leave BSE @ 2:45pm on Friday, December 7th for Jackson Street School. We plan to arrive by 3:15pm, or slightly earlier. If you are planning on driving your own child, or if you are available to drive other players, please see Mr. Hosler at your convenience.
Drivers will NOT be responsible for feeding players prior to or following a game. If student-athletes would like to stop on the way home @ a fast-food restaurant and purchase food (entirely at the discretion of each parent-driver), they must bring their own money. Parent drivers are NOT responsible for feeding student-athletes other than their own children.
Please note that parents are responsible for transportation arrangements to and from the tournament on Saturday. See Coach Hosler if you need assistance in finding a ride that morning (*Friday evening is too late to try and find a ride, so please make arrangements by Thursday evening). Players must also plan on bringing their own food & drinks to the tournament, or plan to bring plenty of money (for at least one snack, drinks, and one meal). Please note that we could possibly have up to 9-hours between games on Saturday. If your plans are to stay at the tournament all day, come prepared!
If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please contact Coach Hosler at the school, or by calling him on his cell phone @ (530) 514-8356. I am open to suggestions, and am available for appointments / meetings as well. Thank you for supporting our team, & GO BADGERS!

2012/2013 Basketball Update!
Preview of an article from Mr. Pindell's Newsletter (To be published on Thursday, November 29th)
The Big Springs Badgers got off to an early start for boys and girls basketball. Over the past two weeks, our boys and girls have had the luxury of an open gym with coaches present to work on the fundamentals and conditioning so necessary for success on the floor. Coach Hosler (who has had much success with girls teams in previous schools), will be coaching our girls team and is assisted by Kristi Apodaca. Mr. Njaa returns as our boys coach and will get much appreciated support and mentoring from Coach Hosler. What a great response to signups! More than 20 boys and over 20 girls are signed up for the team.
Boys and girls basketball is open for all students grades 5-8. We should have sufficient uniforms for all of our players. Due to the overwhelming interest, we will "suit-up" all of our players for home games. We will be forced to limit our traveling team to 15 players. The "traveling team" will not be determined by grade level alone. Rather, our traveling team will consist of those players who exhibit both skill and commitment to the team. This means that athletes who show up for practice every day, work hard, and maintain good grades may "bump" an older athlete from the traveling squad. Of course, all things being equal, our traveling team will mostly consist of 6, 7, & 8 grade players, but they need to stay on their toes as we have some very good 5th grade athletes! Please visit this website regularly for complete information on schedules, tournaments, and eligibility requirements/expectations.
